Asar Castle is a historical and strategically important castle ruin located in the Akçaşehir district of Bolu.
Story
Asar Castle, located northeast of the Akçaşehir district of Bolu, on the western bank of the Göynük Stream, built on a steep slope, is one of the important defensive structures of the region. Although the exact construction date of the castle is unknown, it is thought to belong to the Byzantine period, considering its general architectural features and similarities with other castles in the region. The castle was strategically located, especially as part of the Byzantine Empire's defense line in Anatolia. This castle, which controlled the Göynük Stream valley, both monitored military passage routes and ensured the security of the surrounding settlements. Although the castle ruins have been largely destroyed, traces of the city walls and some towers are still visible. It is understood that rubble stone and mortar were used in its construction. It is estimated that there were structures such as living areas, cisterns, and watchtowers inside the castle. However, the remains that have survived to the present day do not provide sufficient information about the details of these structures.
