Bolu Hisar Hill Archaeological Site
Description
Located in Bolu city center, Hisar Hill is an important archaeological site harboring the remains of the ancient city of Bithynion.
Story
Rising just beside Bolu city center, Hisar Hill conceals the remains of the ancient city of Bithynion, a place lost in the depths of history but whose traces reach our present day. With a deep-rooted past extending to pre-Christian eras, Bithynion gained significant importance especially during the Roman Empire, and during the time of Emperor Claudius, it was renamed "Claudiopolis," becoming the administrative and cultural center of the region. This strategic location stemmed from the city's position on ancient trade routes, serving as a bridge between Anatolia's interior and the Black Sea. Surface surveys and limited excavations on Hisar Hill have revealed the presence of city wall remnants, ceramic fragments, and various architectural elements. These findings indicate that the city was continuously settled from the Hellenistic period to the Byzantine era. Upon reaching the summit, it is possible to feel the ghost of this ancient city lying beneath Bolu's modern structures. Observing the surroundings from the hill provides a bird's-eye view, allowing you to visualize the daily hustle and bustle of people who lived here in the past, the structures they built, and their defensive strategies. Hisar Hill is more than just an archaeological site; it is an important part of Bolu's cultural identity and a must-visit destination for those who wish to understand the region's rich history. Although questions like where the ancient city exactly began and ended, and what route the city walls followed, have not yet been fully answered, the natural elevation of the hill and its surrounding slopes clearly demonstrate why this location was preferred as a settlement for centuries. Many more secrets of this area await to be uncovered with future detailed archaeological studies.
