Story
The theater, one of the most magnificent structures of the ancient city of Kibyra, was built on the southwestern slope of the city. With a capacity of approximately 10,000 people, it was one of the most important entertainment and performance centers of its time. The stage building (skene) of the theater is three-storied and features rich architectural decorations. The seating rows (cavea) are arranged in a semi-circle and boast excellent acoustics. One of the most striking features of the theater is a special pool located in the middle of the orchestra pit, believed to have been used for gladiatorial contests. This pool indicates that the theater was used not only for dramatic performances but also for various other events such as water shows and gladiatorial fights. The construction and use of the theater date back to the Roman Empire period, specifically the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Kibyra was an important urban center during the Roman Empire, and the theater was a testament to this wealth and cultural life. Today, the theater has been restored and is open to visitors.
