Description

Aktopraklık Mound Archaeopark and Open-Air Museum in Nilüfer, Bursa is one of Turkey’s most important archaeoparks, recreating village life from the Neolithic era.

Story

Located in the Nilüfer district of Bursa, the Aktopraklık Mound Archaeopark and Open-Air Museum is one of the rare sites that makes the Neolithic period, dating back about nine thousand years, tangible and understandable enough to literally walk through. Set on a gently rising plateau stretching toward the foothills of Mount Uludağ, the mound was first revealed through scientific excavations and then transformed into an original archaeopark project in which archaeologists and architects worked side by side. When you arrive, you are not greeted by a massive modern museum building, but by structures that blend into the landscape and evoke mudbrick and timber architecture. These buildings were reconstructed using data from the excavations and follow the likely plan of a Neolithic village. Narrow alleys, shared spaces, simple hearths and grain storage pits make it easier to imagine everyday life in that era. Once you step inside the houses, you encounter replicas of finds such as animal bones, small clay figurines, grinding stones and ceramic vessels, and you gain a clearer sense of how archaeologists deciphered who lived in this village and how they lived, using these clues. One of the most striking aspects of Aktopraklık is that it does more than merely exhibit remains; it offers an experience. On specific days, workshops allow children to try their hand at making pottery, while adults can join activities such as grinding grain with traditional tools or starting a fire using ancient techniques. In this way, history ceases to be an abstract set of facts and becomes a reality you can touch, smell and walk through. The archaeopark also occupies a calm rural setting with wide views. In spring and autumn, when the surrounding fields and trees turn lush and green, wandering among the Neolithic houses feels like taking a brief journey back in time. Information panels are prepared in Turkish and English, and the signposted route is easy for visitors to follow. For archaeology enthusiasts and families with children alike, the Aktopraklık Mound Archaeopark and Open-Air Museum offers an educational yet enjoyable stop. Just a short drive from central Bursa, it is an important cultural site that reminds visitors the city’s past did not begin with the Ottomans, but reaches back to far older layers.
