Description

Located on a small peninsula in Gölyazı, Apollonia ad Rhyndacum is one of Bursa’s most unique settlements with a multilayered history stretching from antiquity to the Byzantine era.

Story

The Ancient City of Apollonia ad Rhyndacum in Gölyazı is one of the rare places where nature and history intertwine, built on a small peninsula surrounded by the waters of Lake Uluabat. In antiquity it was one of the important settlements of the Mysia region, taking its name both from the god Apollo and from the Rhyndakos River (today’s Mustafakemalpaşa River) flowing nearby. Today it looks like a modest fishing town attached to Bursa’s Nilüfer district, yet as you wander through its narrow streets and stone houses you can feel traces of the Roman and Byzantine eras at every corner. As you approach the town, the calm surface of the lake and the historic stone bridge that connects the peninsula to the mainland greet you first. Crossing this bridge, it is easy to imagine the merchants, soldiers and travelers who passed the same point over centuries. When you climb to the higher parts of the peninsula, you see remains of fortification walls once used for defense, traces of ancient masonry and building foundations that have been partially uncovered. Although excavations are limited, the inscriptions, sarcophagi and architectural fragments that have been found indicate that Apollonia ad Rhyndacum was a respected city on a regional scale. During the Byzantine period the city served as a bishopric center, preserving clues to the history of Christianity. Old church foundations and pieces of marble decoration suggest how impressive its religious buildings once were. In the Ottoman era it turned into a small but lively settlement sustained by lake fishing and agriculture. Thus the city gained a continuous historical layer from antiquity to modern Turkey, with different cultures overlapping one another. Walking through Gölyazı’s streets, it is not surprising to encounter reused column drums, inscriptions or marble blocks embedded in house walls. These details show how everyday life and ancient heritage coexist. Near sunset, the reddening light over the lake, the silhouette of the peninsula and the storks appearing in the distance create a tranquil backdrop to the historic atmosphere of the city. Sitting quietly by the shore, watching the lake and the peninsula, you realize more clearly that Apollonia ad Rhyndacum is not merely an archaeological site but a living historical stage. For visitors, this ancient city does not offer grand temples or fully unearthed theaters in the classical sense; instead it promises a past that is read through small details woven into daily life. The winding lanes, jetties stretching into the lake, locals resting under old plane trees and stone artifacts hidden between walls together make exploring Gölyazı a calm yet unforgettable experience.
