The Ancient City Walls of İznik, one of the best-preserved defense lines in Anatolia, merge with the tranquil atmosphere of the lakeshore to create a unique historical stage. Encircling the town in a ring of roughly five kilometers, the walls were first built during the Roman Empire and then repaired and reinforced in the Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods, surviving all the way to the present day. The monumental gates along the walls form not only the physical entrances to the city, but also symbolic thresholds in time.
