Story
Apolyont-Gölyazı boasts a rich history stretching from ancient times to the present day. This settlement, whose ancient name was Apollonia ad Rhyndacum, is believed to be an ancient city founded in the 6th century BC. It was an important center during the Roman and Byzantine periods, especially serving as an episcopal see during the Byzantine Empire. The church ruins, traces of an ancient theater, and remnants of city walls on the peninsula reveal the region's past glory. Gölyazı continued its existence during the Ottoman period as a settlement sustained by fishing and agriculture. Today, it captivates visitors with its narrow streets, historic houses, and the unique view of Lake Uluabat. The monumental tree known as "Weeping Plane Tree" is one of the symbols of the region and has been the subject of many legends with its centuries-old history. Gölyazı also holds great importance in terms of its lake ecosystem; it hosts many bird species and is protected under the Ramsar Convention.
