Aya Yani Monastery is situated on a hill overlooking the sea, amidst olive trees, in the town of Tirilye (Zeytinbağı), part of Bursa's Mudanya district. Although the exact construction date of the monastery is unknown, based on its architectural features and other Byzantine structures in the region, it is believed to date back to the Byzantine period, specifically the Middle Byzantine period (9th – 12th centuries). The monastery is named after John the Baptist (Saint Ioannes Prodromos). It is understood that the monastery held a significant place in the religious and cultural life of the region during the Byzantine era, particularly serving as a center where monks retreated for solitude and religious education. It is estimated that it continued to function for some time after the Ottoman Empire conquered the region, but eventually it was abandoned and fell into ruin. Today, a large part of the monastery is destroyed. Among the remaining ruins, the apse walls of the main church, some supporting walls, and traces of the foundation can be seen. The plan of the structure is thought to be basilical or a closed Greek cross plan, in accordance with typical Byzantine church architecture. The stone masonry and mortar remnants provide clues about the construction techniques of the period.
