Story
The history of Bursa Castle dates back to the 1st century BC, and it is believed to have been first built by the Bithynians. Strengthened during the Roman Empire, the castle maintained its strategic importance, especially during the Byzantine Empire. During the Byzantine period, the walls were expanded and reinforced. In 1326, Bursa Castle was besieged and conquered by Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, becoming the first capital of the Ottomans. This conquest played a key role in the establishment and growth of the Ottoman State. The castle also underwent repairs and additions during the Ottoman period. Today, a large part of the castle remains standing, with important gates such as Saltanat Gate, Yer Kapı, Zindan Kapı, Fetih Kapı, and Pınarbaşı Kapı, as well as some sections of the walls, open to visitors. There are also some Ottoman-era structures and tombs within the castle.
