Description

The Bursa Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art, housed in the historic Yesil Madrasa within the Yesil Complex, showcases outstanding examples of Ottoman and Islamic art.

Story

The Bursa Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art, commonly known as the Yesil Madrasa, is one of the quiet yet most instructive corners of the Yesil Complex on the eastern slopes of the city. Built in the first half of the 15th century during the reign of Çelebi Mehmed as a madrasa, it served for centuries as a center of learning and religious education and has now been transformed into a museum that sheds light on the early Ottoman period. As you step into the courtyard, you are greeted by the classic layout of an Ottoman madrasa: a rectangular courtyard in the center, surrounded by porticoes and small rooms, and on the southern side the main lecture hall where lessons were once given. The walls, built with a harmony of stone and brick, combined with tile-decorated details, immediately reveal that the building shares the same aesthetic language as the Yesil Tomb and the Yesil Mosque. The interior arrangement of the museum preserves this historical character while using display cases and panels to create an easy route for visitors to follow. Among the objects on display are Ottoman manuscripts, calligraphic panels, copies of the Qur’an, examples of woodcarving, door wings, fragments of pulpits and preaching platforms, Iznik and Kütahya tiles, metalwork, and religious objects from daily life. Each case offers not only visual beauty but also important clues about the belief system, artistic approach, and craftsmanship traditions of the period. The sections devoted to calligraphy and tiles are among the areas where both local and foreign visitors spend the most time. One of the most striking aspects of the museum is that the former student cells are now divided into different thematic rooms. As visitors move from one cell to another, they seem to travel across centuries: in one room they witness the art of the book, while in the next they discover the fine carving of wooden door leaves. This natural link between the madrasa’s past and its present museum function turns the place into a living history classroom rather than just an exhibition space. Easily accessible from the center of Bursa, the Yesil Madrasa is an ideal stop for understanding the city’s early period as an Ottoman capital, especially when combined with a visit to the Yesil Tomb and Yesil Mosque. Spending a few quiet minutes in the courtyard, gazing at the stone walls, arches, and dome, allows you to imagine the students who once studied here alongside the artifacts now on display. In this way, the museum offers visitors not only information, but also a tangible sense of connection across time.
