The Yıldırım Bayezid Bathhouse was built in the Yıldırım district of Bursa as part of the Yıldırım Bayezid Complex. The complex was commissioned by Yıldırım Bayezid, the fourth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, between 1390 and 1395. The bathhouse, along with other structures of the complex such as the mosque, madrasah, imaret, and darüşşifa (hospital), played a significant role in the social and cultural life of the period. The structure, a fine example of classical Ottoman bathhouse architecture, consists of cold, lukewarm, and hot sections. Cut stone and brick were used in the construction of the bathhouse, and its interiors are covered with domes and vaults. Particularly, the dome in the hot section rests on elephant feet and features a central navel stone. There were period-specific pen-work decorations on the walls and domes, but most of these decorations have been destroyed over time. The bathhouse continued its function for centuries but suffered wear and tear and destruction over time. During the Republican period and afterward, efforts were made to preserve it through various restoration works.
