Story

Iznik Hagia Sophia Orhan Mosque stands in the very center of the town, a calm yet historically dense building you can reach in a few minutes on foot through narrow streets. Its first foundations were laid in the 4th century during the Byzantine era, when it was built as a basilica and became one of Iznik’s main churches. In this city that hosted the important Nicene Councils of Christian history, the structure served not only as a place of worship but also as a stage for intense theological debates. After Orhan Gazi conquered Iznik in 1331, the church was converted into a mosque. Orhan Gazi led the first Friday prayer here, symbolically marking the beginning of a new era and giving the building its present name. During this transformation, the general basilica plan was preserved, while a mihrab, minbar and wooden elements were added to form the Ottoman prayer space. Over the centuries, earthquakes, cracks and fires damaged the building; at times it partly fell into ruin. Yet each restoration added a new layer to its story and allowed it to survive to the present day. When you step inside today, you see Byzantine and Ottoman lines in the same frame, between stone columns and buttresses. Traces of mosaics preserved under the floor recall the original east–west basilica layout. Above, a simple Ottoman prayer hall, plaster decorations and signs of contemporary use define the atmosphere. Daylight filters through the side windows and gives the interior a calmness that seems unchanged across the ages. Around the mosque, everyday life in Iznik unfolds: elders sipping tea on the corner, visitors taking photos, worshippers entering and leaving at prayer times. As a visitor, you are both exploring a historic monument and being a respectful guest in a living place of worship. Sitting quietly to observe the walls, arches and moving light is one of the best ways to let centuries come alive in your mind within a few moments.
