The Iznik Roman Basilica, more commonly known as the Underwater Basilica, is a silent layer of history lying just a few meters off the shore of Lake Iznik. Detected in 2014 in aerial photographs, the structure quickly drew the attention of archaeologists around the world and has come to be seen as a turning point for underwater archaeology in Turkey. Its plan and the artifacts found on site reveal that this was an important Christian place of worship in the late Roman and early Byzantine periods. The basilica is thought to have been dedicated to Saint Neophytos. According to tradition, this young martyr was killed for his faith, and his memory was honored in Iznik with the construction of this impressive church. From the shoreline, the remains of columns, traces of the apse and the outlines of walls just beneath the water’s surface offer visitors a transparent window into the past. On calm days the plan of the building can be seen more clearly; when the lake is slightly rippled, the stone lines take on a ghostly appearance in the reflections.
