Kestel Castle is an important Byzantine-era structure located in the Kestel district of Bursa, at the foothills of Uludağ. The castle was built to control the Bursa Plain and the surrounding passes due to its strategic location. Although its exact construction date is unknown, it is believed to have been actively used during the Byzantine Empire, especially between the 11th and 13th centuries. During this period, it formed a defensive line against Seljuk incursions into Anatolia and played a critical role in the security of the region. The castle was conquered during the founding years of the Ottoman Empire, during the reign of Orhan Gazi. It was an important point of resistance during the conquest of Bursa but eventually fell into the hands of Ottoman forces. It is understood that it was used for some time after the conquest, but over time it lost its military importance and fell into disrepair. Although a large part of the castle has been destroyed today, the surviving ramparts, bastions, and remains of internal structures reveal its past glory.
