Story

In Bursa’s Osmangazi district, just a few streets away from the busy main roads, the noise of the city quickly fades and another atmosphere begins: the Muradiye Complex. Commissioned by Sultan Murad II in the first half of the 15th century, this complex is both a place of worship and a memorial garden that holds the melancholic stories of the Ottoman dynasty. At its center rises the Muradiye Mosque, modest yet striking in its proportions. Cut stone and brick are used together on the facades, and decoration never becomes ostentatious; instead, a measured simplicity, true to the spirit of the period, dominates the design. Stepping into the interior of the mosque, the first sensations are the coolness provided by the thick walls and the soft, dim light. The elegant stonework of the mihrab and minbar, the geometric patterns carved into the wooden doors, and the painted ornamentation on the walls all reflect the characteristic features of early Ottoman architecture in Bursa. Sultan Murad II, as well as princes, consorts and various members of the royal family, have found their final resting place here.
