Story
The Osmangazi Monument is located in the Tophane district of Bursa, right next to the Tomb of Orhan Gazi. The body of Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, was brought from Söğüt to Bursa and buried here according to his will. However, the current monument and tomb structure differ from their original form. The initial burial place of Osman Gazi was the chapel section of the Saint Elie Church, dating from the Byzantine period. This structure was severely damaged and rendered unusable in the Great Bursa Earthquake of 1855. After the earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1863 by order of Sultan Abdülaziz. The new structure has more of a tomb appearance, with an octagonal plan and covered by a dome. Inside, there is Osman Gazi's wooden sarcophagus. The area around the monument is surrounded by the tombs of other important figures from the Ottoman period and historical structures. Its location within Tophane Park offers visitors both a historical atmosphere and the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of Bursa.
