The origins of the Çanakkale Archaeology Museum date back to archaeological studies that began in the region towards the end of the 19th century. Especially the excavations carried out by Heinrich Schliemann in the ancient city of Troy and subsequent works by other archaeologists brought numerous artifacts to light from the region. The need to preserve and exhibit these artifacts gave rise to the idea of establishing a museum. Initially, a small depot museum began to serve in Çanakkale High School in 1911, but with the increasing number of artifacts, a larger area was needed. During the Republican era, in 1932, an old church building in Çanakkale was restored and arranged as a museum and opened to visitors. However, as archaeological excavations in the region continued unabated and new finds were brought to the museum, this building also became insufficient. For this reason, the foundations of today's modern museum building were laid in 1984 and it was put into service in 1988. The museum houses artifacts unearthed from important ancient cities such as Troy, Assos, Parion, Lampsakos, and other archaeological sites in the surrounding area.
