Description
Çimenlik Fortress is an important Ottoman castle protecting the Çanakkale Strait.
Story
Çimenlik Castle, located on the Anatolian side of the Çanakkale Strait, is a historic fort built during the Ottoman period. Built in 1452 by Mehmed II, the castle was used to protect the strait from the sea with its strategic position. During the Gallipoli Campaign, it was a significant defensive point and now functions as a museum. Inside the castle, there is a museum named after the Nusret Mine Sweeper, which served as a dispensary here. Nusret Mine Sweeper changed the course of the war in 1915 by laying mines in the Çanakkale Strait. Original models of this ship and many documents and artifacts from that period are displayed for visitors. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the strait from the castle walls and learn detailed information about the wartime. Çimenlik Castle is an important stop to understand the historical and cultural heritage of Çanakkale.
