The New Zealand Memorial was erected to commemorate the New Zealand soldiers who lost their lives on the Gallipoli Peninsula during the Çanakkale War. The memorial is located near the village of Büyükanafarta, at Chunuk Bair, where some of the fiercest battles of the war took place. This area was a strategic point in 1915 where ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) troops landed and engaged in tough struggles with Ottoman forces. The New Zealand Memorial is situated near the summit of Chunuk Bair, and the surrounding war trenches and tunnels are still visible. The design of the memorial was commissioned by the New Zealand Government and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), which operated in the region after the war. Inscribed on the memorial are the names of New Zealand soldiers who died in the war but whose graves could not be found. Every year on April 25th, as part of ANZAC Day commemorations, ceremonies are held here with the participation of visitors from Australia and New Zealand, as well as Turkish officials.
