Story
The Nusret Mine Layer was built in 1911 at the Germania Shipyard in Kiel, Germany, and joined the Ottoman Navy in 1913. It earned a significant place in Turkish and world history with its heroism during the Çanakkale War. On the night of March 8, 1915, under the command of Captain Tophaneli Hakkı Bey, the Nusret Mine Layer successfully laid 26 mines in Karanlık Liman (Dark Harbor), along the route of the enemy fleet. These mines completely changed the course of the war on March 18, 1915, causing the sinking of major warships like the Bouvet, Irresistible, and Ocean from the Allied Powers' fleet as they attempted to cross the Çanakkale Strait. This strategic move by the Nusret Mine Layer played a key role in winning the Çanakkale Victory and led to the retreat of the enemy fleet. After the war, the ship was used for various duties and was scrapped in 1962. However, in the early 1990s, it was restored to be displayed as a monument ship in a park in Tarsus. Today, a replica built true to its original form serves as a museum ship open to visitors in the Çanakkale Strait, under the Çanakkale Naval Museum Command.
