Ophryneion Ancient City is situated on Çıplak Tepe, northeast of the Erenköy district of Çanakkale. This city, mentioned in ancient sources, is particularly known for legends claiming that the tomb of the mythological figure Hector, associated with the Trojan War, is located here. Ancient geographers like Strabo described Ophryneion as the place where Hector's tomb was. Although the exact founding date of the city is unknown, it is thought to have developed similarly to other Troad cities in the region. Archaeological findings support its rise to prominence during the Hellenistic period and its continued existence during the Roman period. Thanks to its strategic location, Ophryneion became an important port city and trade center controlling the entrance to the Dardanelles.
