Hierapolis Ancient City was founded in the Phrygian region, in an area with thermal springs. The city's establishment dates back to the early 2nd century BC, during the period of the Kingdom of Pergamon. It is believed to have taken its name from Hiera, the wife of Telephus, the legendary founder of Pergamon, and Queen of the Amazons. Hierapolis experienced significant development during the Roman Empire, particularly flourishing in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. During this period, the city became a center for health and healing thanks to its thermal waters, attracting many visitors. Hierapolis also holds great importance in Christian history; its proximity to Laodicea, one of the seven churches mentioned in the Bible, and the belief that the Apostle Philip was martyred here, made the city an important pilgrimage center in the early Christian period.
