Story
Mount Honaz National Park lies within the Honaz district of Denizli province and was declared a national park in 1995. Covering Mount Honaz (2,571 metres), the highest mountain in the Aegean Region, the area is especially important for its vegetation and wildlife. The geology of the mountain consists of limestone and volcanic rocks, which has allowed different ecosystems to develop. The park's flora is remarkable: many plant species reflecting the transition between Mediterranean and continental climates grow side by side. Particularly rich in endemic species, Mount Honaz is also an important natural laboratory for scientific research. The forests consist mainly of Turkish red pine, black pine and juniper, while alpine meadows and herbaceous plants spread across the higher slopes. The park is also rich in fauna: mammals such as wild goats, bears, wolves, foxes and badgers live here, along with birds of prey such as eagles, hawks and falcons and various songbirds. Deep valleys, canyons and caves within the park add to the variety of the natural landscape. The park also offers suitable areas for activities such as mountaineering, hiking and photography. Some historical remains and traces of settlement on the foothills of Mount Honaz show that the area has been inhabited since antiquity. However, the main purpose of the park is to ensure the sustainability of its natural ecosystems and biodiversity. Abundant water sources and waterfalls also add to the park's natural beauty. The variety of climates in the area allows many different plant and animal species to live together. The national park is an important place of recreation and education for both local people and nature tourism enthusiasts.
