Story
Körtik Tepe is an important archaeological excavation site dating back to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period (10,000-8,000 BCE), located on the banks of the Tigris River within the borders of the Bismil district of Diyarbakır. Discovered in the early 2000s as part of the Ilısu Dam rescue excavations, this mound is considered one of the oldest settlements in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. As a result of the excavations, striking findings have been obtained regarding the early stages of the transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to settled life. At Körtik Tepe, round-planned adobe and stone-based dwellings, storage pits, and various workshop areas have been unearthed. Particularly, this settlement provides rich data regarding burial customs, with human skeletons found buried under the floors of houses or in their immediate vicinity. In these burials, it was observed that the deceased were buried with their personal belongings, and some skeletons were covered with red ochre. Furthermore, a rich inventory of artifacts has been brought to light at Körtik Tepe, including obsidian and flint tools, ornaments made of bone and horn, stone vessels, and figurines.
