Story
The Sultan Shuja Tomb is located in the historic Sur district of Diyarbakır, at the southwestern corner of İçkale (Inner Castle), near the ruins of the Artuqid Palace. The structure dates back to the Aq Qoyunlu period and is believed to have been built in the late 15th century. The tomb was constructed in the name of Sultan Shuja, the son of the Aq Qoyunlu ruler Uzun Hasan. The Aq Qoyunlu were an important Turkmen state that ruled in Eastern Anatolia and Azerbaijan from the late 14th to the late 15th century. Sultan Shuja was a significant figure in the Aq Qoyunlu dynasty and was influential in the region during Diyarbakır's period under Aq Qoyunlu rule. The architecture of the tomb exhibits typical features of religious structures from the Aq Qoyunlu period. Generally square-planned and domed, the tomb stands out with its cut stone masonry. Traces of the period's decorative art can be found in its interior, though they may have suffered damage over time. On the exterior facade of the structure, elements of Islamic art such as geometric motifs and Kufic script examples can be seen.
