Story
Alipaşa Bazaar is an important historical structure located in the center of Edirne, dating back to the Ottoman Empire. The bazaar was commissioned by Grand Vizier Hersekli Semiz Ali Pasha to Mimar Sinan between 1560 and 1569, during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. As one of the fine examples of classical Ottoman architecture, the bazaar was built with cut stone and extends as a long and narrow corridor. Shops line both sides of the bazaar, and its roof is covered with vaults. Housing approximately 130 shops in total, the bazaar became one of the important commercial centers of its time. During its construction, it was known as a place where fabrics, spices, and valuable goods were sold. The bazaar has been exposed to many natural disasters such as fires and earthquakes over the centuries, but each time it has been restored and managed to survive to the present day. It underwent significant restorations, especially in the 19th century and early 20th century. Today, Alipaşa Bazaar continues to serve as an active commercial center and is one of the popular destinations for local and foreign tourists visiting Edirne.
