The Edirne Balkan Martyrs' Memorial was built in memory of thousands of Ottoman soldiers who were martyred during the defense of Edirne in the Balkan Wars between 1912 and 1913. The memorial is located northeast of Edirne, on the Kırklareli road, in the Sarayiçi area. Edirne experienced a major siege during the Balkan Wars, and thousands of our soldiers were martyred during this siege. The memorial was established to keep alive the memory of this painful period and the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the defense of the homeland. Construction of the memorial began in the early 1990s and was completed and opened to visitors in 1994. The memorial area is spread over a large green space, containing monumental tombs, symbolic graves, a martyrs' mosque, and a monument. The monument consists of marble slabs inscribed with the names of our martyred soldiers. The memorial also serves as an open-air museum; visitors can experience the atmosphere of that period through information panels and objects from the war era.
