Story
The history of Edirne Castle dates back to the Roman Empire. Founded by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, this castle formed the core of the city then known as 'Hadrianopolis'. Due to its strategic location, the castle attracted the attention of many civilizations over centuries and was strengthened with repairs and additions in different periods. It also served as an important defensive point during the Byzantine Empire, playing a key role in protecting the city against Bulgarians and other invaders. After the Ottoman Empire conquered Edirne (1361), the castle walls and its structures were reorganized and strengthened. During the period when Fatih Sultan Mehmet made Edirne his capital before conquering Istanbul, the castle held great importance both administratively and militarily. However, over time, with the growth of the city and changes in defense strategies, the castle began to lose its former importance. Especially in the 19th century, a large part of the city walls was demolished to expand residential areas.
