Story
The Old Clock Tower in Edirne was built as part of the Saray-ı Cedid-i Amire (New Palace). Construction of the palace began during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet and was further developed by subsequent sultans. Although there are different views regarding the exact construction date of the clock tower, it is generally dated to the late 15th or early 16th century. The tower was one of the structures used for defense and observation within the palace complex. Over time, especially in the 19th century, with the widespread adoption of clock towers in the Ottoman Empire, a clock mechanism was added to this tower. However, the tower has not survived to the present day in its original form. In the late 19th century, particularly in the 1880s during the governorship of Hacı İzzet Pasha of Edirne, it underwent extensive repair and reconstruction. During this period, a new clock was installed in the tower, and its appearance changed significantly. Unfortunately, the tower was severely damaged and destroyed in an earthquake in 1953. Today, only the foundational remains and some stone blocks of the tower can be seen.
