Selimiye Arasta is an important part of the Selimiye Mosque complex, located in the center of Edirne and built by Mimar Sinan. It was constructed in the 16th century, during the reign of Murad III, by Mimar Davut Ağa, with the purpose of generating income for the Selimiye Mosque. The Arasta is built adjacent to the western facade of the mosque and has a long and narrow structure. In this bazaar, approximately 250 meters long, various merchant groups operated in the past. It is particularly known for a high concentration of bow and arrow makers, hence it was also referred to as 'Okçular Arastası' (Archers' Bazaar). The bazaar consists of shops lined on both sides and a corridor running through the middle. The shops are generally small and single-storied. The architecture of the Arasta exhibits typical features of Ottoman bazaar architecture of its period; a sturdy structure was created using stone and brick. There are entrance gates at both ends of the bazaar, and these gates are important points opening to the lively commercial life of the bazaar. Selimiye Arasta has played a central role in the commercial and social life of Edirne for centuries. Today, the bazaar is still actively used, with shops selling souvenirs, traditional handicrafts, and local delicacies.
