Story

Uzunköprü, also known as the Ergene Bridge, is a significant Ottoman engineering structure built over the Ergene River in the Uzunköprü district of Edirne. Constructed in the 15th century during the reign of Sultan Murad II, the bridge was designed to provide safe passage across marshy and flood-prone terrain and to strengthen regional transportation routes. Historical sources indicate that the bridge originally consisted of more than a hundred arches and was considered one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects of its time. Although parts of the structure have been covered by land over the centuries due to environmental changes and urban development, its architectural characteristics and historical traces remain visible. Uzunköprü stands out not only for its strategic function on military and trade routes but also for its craftsmanship reflecting early Ottoman stone architecture. Today, it is regarded as an important element of the region’s cultural heritage and continues to symbolize the historical identity of Uzunköprü.
