Harput Castle, situated on a hill overlooking the plain in the Harput district of Elazığ, is a remarkable structure with a deep-rooted history. Its initial construction is believed to date back to 2000 BC, during the Hurrian-Mitanni Kingdom. The castle has hosted numerous civilizations, including the Urartians, Assyrians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Artuqids, Seljuks, and Ottomans, maintaining its strategic importance throughout each period. Particularly during the Artuqid period, it underwent extensive renovation and expansion, known to have consisted of two main sections: the inner castle and the outer castle. Inside the castle, there were many structures such as palaces, mosques, baths, water cisterns, and dungeons. According to legends, it is also known as the 'Milk Castle' among the public because milk was mixed into the mortar during its construction. One of the most striking features of the castle is the Pasha Mansion Kürsübaşı section within it. This section was used by the castle commanders or administrators, serving as a center where meetings were held and important decisions were made. Although a large part of the castle is in ruins today, its surviving walls and remnants allow visitors to feel the grandeur of the past.
