Kurtuluş Mosque
Description
Kurtuluş Mosque in the Şahinbey district of Gaziantep is a historic building originally constructed as a church in the late Ottoman period, later used as a prison in the Republican era, and eventually converted into a mosque.
Story
Kurtuluş Mosque is one of the most remarkable historical buildings in Gaziantep, notable for its multi-layered past. Built in the late Ottoman period as a church for the local Christian community, the structure differs from classical mosque silhouettes with its high outer walls, elongated rectangular plan and monumental mass. During the early Republican era, it was used as a prison, and later it was converted into a mosque through interior and functional alterations. Today, original church features and added mosque elements can still be observed together in its architecture. The interior offers a simple layout with a spacious prayer hall. Kurtuluş Mosque functions not only as a place of worship but also as a symbolic building reflecting the city’s social and historical memory, and thanks to its central location in Şahinbey, it is frequently visited by both locals and visitors.
