Located in the İslahiye district of Gaziantep, Zincirli Höyük contains the remains of the ancient city of Sam'al dating back to the Iron Age.

Story

Zincirli Höyük is an important settlement located in the İslahiye district of Gaziantep, known in antiquity as the city of Sam'al. The city gained prominence during the Iron Age in the 1st millennium BC as the capital of the Sam'al Kingdom, one of the Late Hittite states. Due to its strategic position, it served as a key point on trade and cultural routes connecting Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and the Levant. Archaeological excavations have revealed city walls, monumental gates, palace structures, and basalt reliefs, indicating Sam'al’s advanced political and cultural organization. Inscriptions found on statues and reliefs provide valuable insights into governance, belief systems, and artistic traditions of the period. Systematic excavations conducted by German archaeologists since the late 19th century uncovered numerous artifacts, many of which are now displayed in major museums worldwide. The site is considered a key reference point for understanding Iron Age urban planning in Anatolia. Today, Zincirli Höyük is an open archaeological site where visitors can trace the remains of an ancient capital while exploring the multilayered history of Southeastern Anatolia from prehistoric times to the classical era. It holds a distinguished place within the region’s cultural heritage.
