Story

Santa Ruins, located within the boundaries of Dumanlı village in Gümüşhane’s central district, is one of the most striking historical settlements of the Eastern Black Sea region. Sources indicate that the settlement developed especially from the 17th century onwards as a Greek mining town. Over time, the area expanded into seven distinct quarters featuring single- and two-storey stone houses, at least one church in each quarter, fountains and narrow stone-paved streets. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the exploitation of nearby mines made Santa an economically significant center and a vibrant cultural hub with a predominantly Greek Orthodox population. Following the 1923 population exchange, most inhabitants left the region and the town gradually fell into ruin. Today, the remains of stone houses, churches and other structures offer visitors a poignant yet impressive atmosphere. Its high altitude, forested surroundings and narrow valley paths also make Santa an attractive route for nature hikers. Santa Ruins is regarded as an important cultural heritage site that sheds light on Greek civil architecture and the multicultural past of the Eastern Black Sea.
