Description

It is one of Beşiktaş's oldest neighborhood mosques and features traditional Ottoman architecture.

Story

Abbas Ağa Mosque, built in the 17th century, is one of the oldest religious structures in the settlement history of Beşiktaş. The mosque was commissioned by Abbas Ağa, one of the palace aghas during the reign of Sultan Murad IV. This neighborhood mosque possesses both a simple architecture and a strong spiritual value among the public. Beşiktaş evolved into an important residential area over time with the expansion of palaces, mansions, and commercial zones; in this process, the mosque became one of the centers of neighborhood culture. The mosque's architecture reflects the traditional Ottoman neighborhood mosque typology. With its rectangular prayer hall, wooden ceiling, and a minaret added later, it has a simple yet warm atmosphere. Although ceiling decorations and interior details have been renewed as a result of restorations, the mosque preserves its original spirit. Old plane trees stand in its courtyard, and these trees are a familiar meeting place for neighborhood residents. Throughout its history, it has undergone repairs due to various earthquakes, fires, and urban planning adjustments. A restoration in the 2010s made the mosque more durable, and its surroundings were also arranged. The mosque's name is often mentioned in conjunction with the Beşiktaş Bazaar culture; it has been a centuries-old tradition for tradesmen to pass by here after morning prayers to open their shops. Today, Abbas Ağa Mosque continues its existence as a peaceful breathing space and a nostalgic neighborhood symbol amidst the fast pace of modern Beşiktaş.
