Description

A Black Sea town famous for its natural beach located between the Yeşilçay and Göksu rivers.

Story

Ağva is a coastal town in the Şile district north of Istanbul, extremely rich in terms of nature and history. Its name is thought to derive from the Latin word 'Aqua', meaning 'water', because the town was established at the point where two important rivers, Göksu and Yeşilçay, meet the Black Sea. This region has been a settlement area since ancient times. Ağva, used as a small fishing and coastal observation village during the Roman and Byzantine periods, continued its development with forest products, fishing, and small-scale trade activities during the Ottoman period. Ağva's most characteristic feature is nature embracing the town in two layers: on one side, slowly flowing rivers, and on the other, a long coastline and vast forested areas. For this reason, the region has become one of the most preferred places for hikers, campers, and nature photographers alike. Ağva began to gain more recognition in terms of tourism in the second half of the 20th century; its popularity rapidly increased, especially since the 1990s, with boutique hotels, bungalow facilities, riverside restaurants, and canoe activities. One of Ağva's most attractive aspects is its ability to offer both river and sea experiences very close to the town center. Visitors can canoe on the Göksu River in the morning and watch the sunset on the Black Sea's long coast in the evening. Additionally, there are small caves, rock formations, trekking routes, and photography spots in the region. Today, Ağva is an ideal center for both day trips and longer stays, thanks to its proximity to Istanbul, its natural tranquility, and historical texture.
