Alemdağ Forest
Description
One of Istanbul's largest forests, a popular natural area for walking and sports.
Story
Alemdağ Forest, stretching between Ümraniye and Çekmeköy, is one of Istanbul's largest and most established natural forest areas. The history of the forest texture in the region dates back to the Ottoman hunting grounds period. In the 19th century, the area around Alemdağ was an important rural region known for both natural game animals and forest products. Thanks to its vast pine and oak forests, it served as a natural oxygen depot on the eastern side of Istanbul. During the Republic period, the region was taken under protection and made suitable for public use. Alemdağ Forest, which began to attract the attention of hiking and sports groups in the 1970s, has today become one of the most preferred training routes for professional runners. The winding paths, dirt running trails, and extensive picnic areas within the forest have transformed it into a versatile natural area. Ecologically, Alemdağ Forest is quite rich. Pine, oak, linden, chestnut, and ash species are common in the area. In addition, numerous bird species, as well as rabbits, foxes, and squirrels, enrich the region's natural life. Traces of old village settlements, waterways, and small stream beds can still be seen in a part of the forest area. Alemdağ Forest, Istanbul, is one of the rare natural regions that, while remaining within the city, still gives the feeling of being completely disconnected from it.
