Story
Ayvad Bendi Nature Park is a natural and historical area encompassing the surroundings of Ayvad Bendi, one of the important water structures of Belgrade Forest. The dam was built during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III in 1765 to meet Istanbul's growing water needs. This dam, which holds great importance in terms of Ottoman water engineering, still largely preserves its original structure today. The pond formed by Ayvad Bendi and the surrounding forest area have played a critical role for centuries in both water supply and the protection of the natural ecosystem. The forest texture around the dam hosts many species such as oak, beech, hornbeam, and chestnut. The region is also rich in bird diversity and small mammals. During the Republican era, the dam and its surroundings were taken under protection, gaining nature park status in 2011 to become a more regulated area of use. Walking paths, jogging tracks, and picnic areas were created within the forest; however, its natural character has been preserved without allowing construction. Ayvad Bendi Nature Park is one of Istanbul's most important green areas today, both historically and naturally. The dam structure is an impressive engineering example that carries the Ottoman water management system to the present day.
