Story

Belgrade Forest is one of Istanbul's largest, oldest, and most important natural ecosystems. It takes its name from the Serbian prisoners brought to Istanbul by Suleiman the Magnificent during his Belgrade campaign in the 16th century, who were settled here. Although this settlement disappeared over time, the name remained with the forest. The forest has played a strategic role in meeting the city's water needs since ancient times. The water supply system, which began during the Byzantine period, was expanded during the Ottoman era, and Belgrade Forest became Istanbul's most important water source with its dams, aqueducts, and streams. Structures such as Topuzlu Bent, Valide Bent, and Kömürcü Bent within the forest are among the most robust examples of Ottoman engineering. These dams still stand today, integrated with the historical natural structure. In the 19th century, Belgrade Forest played a significant role in Istanbul's entertainment and recreation culture. City dignitaries and the public, especially during the summer months, would come to the forest; picnics, horseback riding, and recreational activities were organized. The ecological structure of the forest is extraordinary. Dense with oak, beech, hornbeam, chestnut, and pine trees, the forest boasts rich biodiversity with roe deer, foxes, various bird species, and diverse plant species. Today, the forest is heavily visited by running groups, cyclists, photographers, trekking enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Within Istanbul's increasingly concrete urban fabric, Belgrade Forest continues to be a vital natural breathing source that sustains the city.
