Story

Beşiktaş Naval Museum is one of Turkey's museums that presents the country's maritime history with the most extensive collections. Initially established in 1897 to preserve the memorabilia and objects of the Ottoman Navy, the museum moved locations multiple times, expanded its collection, and finally relocated to its current center in Beşiktaş in 1961. The new modern building, opened in 2013, has been brought up to international standards in terms of both architectural design and exhibition layout. The museum exhibits Ottoman imperial caiques, objects related to naval battles, naval archives, flags, maps, ship models, and various elements of maritime culture. The most striking section is the imperial caiques hall. Here, gigantic caiques, used by Ottoman sultans and adorned with intricate craftsmanship, are displayed. These caiques, over 30 meters long, showcase the splendor of the palace and the magnificence of naval ceremonies of their era. Each caique, with its embroidered gold leaf details, dragon-headed prows, and special oar designs, is like a floating palace room. Furthermore, items belonging to Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha, memoirs of Ottoman captains, and naval uniforms enhance the historical richness of the museum. The collection also extensively features parts of warships from the Republican era, artifacts from the Gallipoli naval battles, shipwreck salvage equipment, and documents concerning the development of the modern Turkish navy. Today, the Beşiktaş Naval Museum not only carries Istanbul's cultural heritage but also offers a unique learning space for visitors interested in maritime history.
