Story

Beyazıt Mosque, built between 1501 and 1506 by Bayezid II, is considered one of the early masterpieces of classical Ottoman architecture. Located in Beyazıt Square, one of Istanbul's busiest squares, the mosque stands as one of the city's symbols with its spiritual and historical values. Its architect is believed to be Yakup Şah Bin Sultan Şah. The mosque, with its central dome layout, semi-domes, and spacious courtyard, is one of the first major works that blend the influence of Hagia Sophia with an Ottoman interpretation. The mosque complex (külliye) consists of a madrasa, an imaret (soup kitchen), a hammam (bathhouse), and tomb sections. These structures have undergone various repairs over time, and some parts have not survived to the present day. The mosque has endured many major earthquakes; it suffered various damages in the earthquakes of 1509, 1766, and 1894, and each time it was strengthened again with extensive restorations. The fountain in its courtyard, with its marble craftsmanship and aesthetic design, attracts visitors. The famous traveler Evliya Çelebi referred to Beyazıt Mosque as “one of Istanbul's most peaceful mosques.” Today, Beyazıt Mosque has a busy flow of visitors due to its proximity to the central campus of Istanbul University and its location surrounded by the Grand Bazaar, Sahaflar Çarşısı (Book Bazaar), and historic streets. The pigeons sitting in its courtyard, the vibrancy of the square, and the sounds of the historic bazaars create a unique atmosphere around the mosque. Its restored interior structure, high acoustics, and spacious dome arrangement allow visitors to feel the early Ottoman architectural spirit.
