Story

Çamlıca Hill is one of Istanbul's points offering the widest and most impressive view. This high area, whose history dates back to the Byzantine period, became a frequent recreational spot during the Ottoman era, especially used by sultans and state officials for viewing the city landscape, hunting, and relaxing. Ottoman sources state that Çamlıca was famous for its spring festivities, especially those organized during the reigns of Ahmed III and Mahmud I. The pine trees growing on the hill, combined with the wind, gave the region its name. In the 19th century, Çamlıca became a favorite spot for Istanbul's aristocratic families; mansions, pavilions, and viewing terraces were built. In the 20th century, as Istanbul's urbanization accelerated, the area maintained its importance as both a picnic spot for the public and a cultural stop. The historical pavilions located on the hill—Küçük Çamlıca Pavilion and residences connected to Topkapı Palace—still reflect the Ottoman heritage of the region today. Büyük Çamlıca Hill also hosts the Çamlıca Mosque, one of modern Turkey's symbolic structures. Additionally, it is a center where TRT and telecommunication broadcast towers are located; this ensures the hill plays an important role in the city's technical infrastructure. From its vantage points, both the Bosphorus, the Princes' Islands, and the Golden Horn can be seen; it is one of the few places in Istanbul with the widest panorama. Foreign travelers have described it as 'one of the balconies of the Orient' since the 19th century. Today, Çamlıca Hill is an indispensable stop for visitors seeking nature, photography, and city panoramas.
