Story

Dolmabahçe Palace is one of the most important architectural works of the Ottoman Empire's modernization period. Built by Sultan Abdülmecid between 1843 and 1856, the palace became the center of Ottoman administration when the state moved from Topkapı to this new structure on the Bosphorus shore. The palace, which emerged from the combination of European baroque, rococo, and neoclassical styles with Ottoman architecture, covers an area of approximately 45,000 square meters and includes 285 rooms, 46 halls, 6 baths, and extensive gardens. One of the most impressive sections of the palace is the Ceremonial Hall (Muayede Salonu). Its 36-meter dome, the giant crystal chandelier brought from England, and its magnificent interior decoration are worth seeing. The total amount of gold used in the palace's decorations is estimated to be close to 14 tons. Additionally, some of the world's largest palace carpets were specially woven in the Hereke factory. Dolmabahçe Palace also witnessed the political events of the late Ottoman period. Abdülhamid II ascended the throne here, the last cabinets of the state gathered here, and after the declaration of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed in the private rooms of this palace during his visits to Istanbul. The room where Atatürk passed away on November 10, 1938, is today the most visited point for visitors. Today, the palace serves as a museum and hosts millions of visitors annually. With its architectural richness, historical importance, and unique location on the Bosphorus, it is one of Istanbul's most prestigious structures.
