Story

Falih Rıfkı Atay Recreation Area is one of the most organized and largest picnic areas within Belgrad Forest. It takes its name from Falih Rıfkı Atay, one of the important writers and journalists of the Republican era. This area, which played an important role in Istanbul's forest culture throughout the 20th century, has become a meeting point for families to connect with nature on weekends. Compared to other parts of Belgrad Forest, the recreation area has wider flatlands. For this reason, it is especially preferred by large groups and families. The area includes wooden picnic tables, walking paths, children's playgrounds, and grassy areas. The forest's structure, surrounded by hornbeam, chestnut, and pine trees, provides both fresh air and shaded spots. Historically, recreation culture has been an important part of Istanbul's public life since the Ottoman Empire. Falih Rıfkı Atay Recreation Area is also one of the modern representatives of this culture. In the 1980s and 1990s, it became one of the most popular picnic destinations for Istanbul families and was also used as an event area by sports clubs, schools, and communities. Today, the area is one of the largest organized natural use areas within Istanbul and continues to exist as one of the important centers that keep the social life of Belgrad Forest vibrant.
