Description

One of Istanbul's oldest Mevlevi lodges, famous for its whirling dervish ceremonies and dervish lodge culture.

Story

The Galata Mevlevi Lodge was established in 1491 by Sheikh Semâî Dede and is the first Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul. As the most significant representative of Mevlevi culture in the city center, this structure served as a hub for religious, cultural, and artistic activities for centuries. The lodge consists of a semahane (ritual hall), dervish cells, the sheikh's apartment, a courtyard, a cemetery (hazire), and tombs. Many poets, musicians, and calligraphers who grew up here shaped Ottoman art. The most impressive part of the lodge is the semahane. The whirling dervish ceremonies performed here are among the most important religious rituals of the Mevlevi tradition. The rhythmic movements of the spinning dervishes combine with the melodies of the ney flute, offering visitors a mystical atmosphere. During the Ottoman period, sultans and statesmen also visited here and observed the ceremonies. After the closure of dervish lodges in 1925, the Galata Mevlevi Lodge remained closed for a long time and was reopened in 1975 after being converted into a museum. Inside, clothing, musical instruments, calligraphy works, and daily life objects belonging to Mevlevi culture are exhibited. With the restoration completed in 2011, the structure was reinforced in accordance with its original form, and its garden and cemetery were arranged. Although İstiklal Avenue, where the lodge is located, has undergone significant changes over time, the Galata Mevlevi Lodge continues to offer a calm and profound spiritual atmosphere amidst this hustle.
