Göktürk Pond
Description
It is a pond area located around Göktürk, known for its walking paths and natural scenery.
Story
Göktürk Pond is a natural water source located in the north of the Göktürk region, part of the Eyüpsultan district, and has become one of Istanbul's most popular walking areas. The pond is considered an extension of the Belgrade Forest ecosystem and plays an important role in the region's water basin system. With the increasing urbanization in the late 20th century, the area around the pond was arranged for public use, creating walking paths, resting points, and areas for the protection of natural life. Göktürk Pond is a natural habitat for water birds, ducks, turtles, and various fish species. The vegetation around the pond consists of oak, hornbeam, ash, and pine trees. The mirror reflection formed on the pond's surface in the morning and evening hours is often preferred by photographers. The area is also very popular among athletes; morning runs and trekking groups, in particular, actively use the pond's surroundings. The pond does not have a historical past linked to a large Ottoman structure or ancient ruins; rather, it has been preserved as a natural accumulation of water since the Republican era and integrated into its surroundings as Göktürk developed. The region has largely managed to preserve its natural character despite urbanization pressures. Today, Göktürk Pond is one of the rare water areas that is close to the city center while also offering a quiet natural environment.
