Description

The Grand Bazaar, one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets, is Istanbul's commercial hub with over 5000 shops.

Story

The Grand Bazaar is a massive market complex whose foundations were laid in the 15th century during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet and has served as the heart of Istanbul's commercial life for centuries. Starting with two main structures called Bedestens—Cevahir and Sandal Bedestens—the bazaar gradually acquired its current labyrinthine structure over time with the closing of streets, addition of shops, and construction of new hans (caravanserais). Being the most important center where Ottoman gold, jewelry, spices, fabrics, and valuable goods were bought and sold, the Grand Bazaar was also one of the places where the state treasury was kept. Today, with over 5000 shops, more than 60 streets, and 30 hans, it is one of the world's largest covered bazaars. The architectural structure of the Grand Bazaar has been shaped according to constantly changing commercial needs and has been repaired repeatedly due to earthquakes and fires. The 1894 earthquake caused significant damage to the bazaar, and a large part of it was renovated through subsequent restorations. The interior of the bazaar is filled with domed passages, arched porticos, and shop structures reflecting the Ottoman artisan tradition. Here, carpet sellers, jewelers, antique dealers, spice merchants, money changers, and hundreds of other different professions operate under the same roof. The atmosphere of the bazaar, with the voices of sellers, the smell of spices, and the traditional bargaining culture, offers one of Istanbul's most characteristic experiences. Today, the Grand Bazaar is still vibrant both touristically and economically. Millions of visitors explore the bazaar, shop, and keep the Ottoman trade culture alive every year. As you wander through its wide corridors, you feel a unique texture where history, culture, and commerce intertwine.
