Description

It is the mosque where the Hırka-i Şerif (the Holy Mantle), one of the sacred relics of the Prophet Muhammad, is preserved.

Story

Hırka-i Şerif Mosque was built in 1851 by Sultan Abdülmecid to preserve the holy mantle believed to belong to Prophet Muhammad. The sacred relic is an heirloom given to Veysel Karani and carefully preserved by his descendants for centuries. Ottoman sultans protected this mantle with great respect and eventually decided to display it in a special structure in Istanbul. The architecture of the mosque features classical Ottoman lines while also showing neo-classical influences of the 19th century. The cylindrical tomb section is the most striking part of the structure. Every Ramadan, millions of people flocked here to see the Hırka-i Şerif. These visits held great spiritual value in Ottoman society; people would both worship and find spiritual peace by seeing the mantle. The tradition continued during the Republican era, with the structure being restored and the holy relic opened to visitors in a controlled manner. Hırka-i Şerif Mosque has undergone numerous maintenance and repairs over time; notably, the restoration in 2017 renewed the interior details, tile decorations, and tomb section, equipping the mosque with modern security systems. Today, the mosque is one of Istanbul's most special places for both worship and visits to the sacred relic. The Karagümrük district, where the mosque is located, stands out with its historical texture. This mosque, where feasts, gatherings, and crowded Ramadan queues took place, holds a deep-rooted place in Istanbul's culture with its spiritual atmosphere and historical importance.
