Description

A unique structure that united Byzantine and Ottoman heritage under one roof and remained the world’s largest temple for over a millennium.

Story

Hagia Sophia was built as a church in 537 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Its architects were Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus. Its massive dome, considered an engineering masterpiece of its time, remained the largest enclosed dome in the world for centuries. During the Byzantine era, it was not only a place of worship but also a symbol of imperial and religious power. After the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, it was converted into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. Minarets, a mihrab, a minbar, and madrasas were added, adapting it to Islamic architecture. The buttresses built by the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan strengthened the structure and ensured its survival for centuries. The giant calligraphic panels inside, combined with golden mosaics, created a unique cultural synthesis. Converted into a museum in 1935, Hagia Sophia regained its status as a mosque in 2020. Today, it welcomes both worshippers and visitors from all over the world. Hagia Sophia is regarded as one of the most significant monuments in human history in terms of architecture, art, and religious heritage and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
